This guide is for architects, M&E businesses and main contractors weighing a UK-manufactured channel against an imported one. It sets out the four places importing actually costs you: programme, tolerance, accountability and, from January 2027, carbon tax. None of these show on the supply quote. The headline quote is not the landed cost
An imported profile is priced at the factory gate abroad. Between that price and a fixed ceiling sit shipping, customs, currency movement, lead time, and the risk that any one of them slips. A UK-manufactured profile is priced closer to where it's used, with fewer links in the chain to break.
The supply saving on imported profiles is real but narrow. The costs that erode it are less visible, so they rarely make it into the comparison at tender stage. They should.
Landed cost — the visible quote is only the first layer

The UK-manufactured bar is a single delivered price. The imported bar starts lower on supply but stacks the layers that turn up later — shipping, customs, lead-time risk, and CBAM from 2027.
Programme — the cost that hurts most
Ceiling channels sit late in the programme. By the time they're needed, the trades above them — M&E, fire, structure — are done and the finishes are closing in behind. There is no float left.
An imported profile carries a lead time measured in weeks, plus the risk of a container delay, a customs hold or a port backlog on top. If the delivery slips, the ceiling slips, and because everything downstream is sequenced off it, the slip cascades. A saving of a few pounds per metre is wiped out by a single week of programme delay on a commercial fit-out.

Tolerance and consistency
Imported profiles vary — between suppliers, between production runs, sometimes within a single delivery. Extrusion die wear, inconsistent alloy and looser factory tolerances all show up as dimensional drift. Individually the deviations are small. Across a long ceiling run butted end to end, they accumulate into steps, gaps and a wandering line.
You also can't always get the same profile twice. A repeat order six months later, from a factory running dozens of dies for dozens of buyers, may not match the first batch. On a phased fit-out or a rolled-out estate, that's a real problem.

The compliance trail
This is the one that surfaces at the worst moment: when someone asks for evidence.
An imported profile often arrives with a thin paper trail. Material certification may be generic, absent, or in a form that doesn't map to UK requirements. Recycled-content claims may be unsubstantiated. Fire and finish documentation may not exist in a format a UK building control officer or a BREEAM assessor will accept.
On a modern commercial project, that documentation isn't optional. Main contractors need a compliance chain for their own client. Architects need substantiated data for sustainability credits. When the profile can't produce it, the cost lands on you — chasing a factory abroad for paperwork, or substituting the product late.

Substitution risk at tender
Here's how imported profiles quietly cost architects their specification.
An architect specifies a channel. At tender, a contractor or supplier offers an imported “equivalent” at a lower supply price. On paper it looks like the same thing. The saving is visible; the differences — tolerance, compliance trail, lead-time risk — are not. The substitution goes through.
Then the differences surface on site: the line isn't as crisp, the paperwork isn't there, the delivery slips. But by then the specified product is gone and the design intent has been compromised to save a margin that the programme delay ate anyway.
Specifying UK manufacture with a clear, documented spec — named product, named manufacturer, substantiated data — makes an imported swap harder to slip through unchallenged. It gives the architect something concrete to defend the specification with.
CBAM — imported aluminium gets more expensive from 2027
There's a new factor that changes the maths, and many buyers haven't priced it in yet.
From 1 January 2027, the UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) applies a carbon price to imported aluminium (among other sectors). The mechanism puts a charge on the embodied carbon of imported goods, so that carbon-intensive imports face a comparable carbon cost to UK-made equivalents. Businesses importing £50,000 or more of CBAM goods in a 12-month period fall in scope, and importers must report the embodied emissions of what they bring in — using actual data where they have it, or default values where they don't.
Two consequences for anyone specifying aluminium:
- The imported price gap narrows. CBAM adds cost to high-carbon imported aluminium — typically the primary-metal, high-footprint material that makes imported profiles cheap in the first place. The cheaper the carbon story, the bigger the CBAM exposure.
- The paperwork burden grows. Importers in scope have to source and report embodied-emissions data on their aluminium. A profile from a factory that can't supply verified carbon data becomes an administrative liability, not just a supply one.

The honest position
Imported aluminium isn't wrong for every job. For a non-critical, non-visible, one-off section where programme has slack and documentation doesn't matter, the supply saving may hold.
But for a specified commercial fit-out — where the line is seen, the programme is tight, the paperwork is required and the carbon is reported — the landed cost of importing is higher than the quote suggests, and from 2027 it climbs further. The saving on the supply line is the easiest number to see and the least reliable one to trust.
