Sustainability guide

How recycled aluminium earns BREEAM and LEED credits

A specification-ready guide for architects, M&E teams and sustainability consultants — how 100% recycled aluminium service channels contribute to BREEAM Mat, Wst and LEED MR credits, with the embodied-carbon evidence to back it up.

Recycled aluminium is one of the most straightforward routes to lower embodied carbon in an architectural ceiling. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, and recycled billet uses roughly 95% less energy than primary production. For projects targeting BREEAM or LEED, the recycled-content and embodied-carbon data behind an aluminium service channel is where credits are won or lost.

Every SEAM and REVEAL profile is extruded in the UK from 100% recycled aluminium billet. The full-lifecycle carbon figure — net of the Module D recycling credit — is 1.84 kg CO₂e/kg. Comparable virgin-billet routes range from 10 to 24 kg CO₂e/kg depending on origin. That gap is what makes recycled aluminium worth specifying by name, not by generic material class.

BREEAM credits

Where recycled aluminium contributes in BREEAM

Mat 01

Environmental impacts from construction products

Mat 01 rewards products with lower whole-life embodied carbon and third-party verified EPDs. A&L Systems recycled aluminium channels have a full-lifecycle figure of 1.84 kg CO₂e/kg (net of Module D) — up to 92% lower CO₂ than imported virgin aluminium routes.

Mat 03

Responsible sourcing of construction products

Mat 03 rewards responsibly sourced materials with recognised certification. UK-manufactured billet with documented recycled content and traceable supply chain supports the responsible-sourcing evidence pack.

Wst 02

Use of recycled and sustainably sourced aggregates / materials

Contributing recycled-content data at product level strengthens the wider material-sourcing narrative. Every SEAM and REVEAL profile is extruded from 100% recycled aluminium billet.

LEED credits

Where recycled aluminium contributes in LEED

  • MR: Building Product Disclosure & Optimization — EPDs

Product-specific Type III EPDs count toward the 20-product threshold. A&L Systems channels ship with third-party verified EPD data covering A1–A3, A4, C2–C4 and Module D.

  • MR: BPDO — Sourcing of Raw Materials

100% post-consumer / pre-consumer recycled billet content contributes to the recycled-content calculation for permanently installed products.

  • MR: BPDO — Material Ingredients

Documented material composition and manufacturing route from a UK extruder supports the ingredient-reporting pathway.

  • EA: Reduced embodied carbon (LEED v4.1 pilot)

Where projects pursue whole-building LCA optimisation, replacing virgin-aluminium ceiling components with 1.84 kg CO₂e/kg recycled channels delivers measurable Module A1–A3 reductions.

Evidence pack

What we supply for the sustainability submission

Every SEAM and REVEAL specification is backed by product-level evidence that plugs directly into BREEAM and LEED workflows.

  • Third-party verified EPD covering full A1–A3, A4, C2–C4 modules and Module D recycling credit.
  • 1.84 kg CO₂e/kg — full lifecycle, net of Module D — for A&L Systems recycled billet.
  • 100% recycled aluminium billet, extruded and finished in the UK.
  • Product-level embodied carbon by profile size (100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm).
  • Responsible-sourcing documentation for the specification pack.
Specification checklist

Getting the credit right on your project

  1. 1Confirm the certification scheme and version (BREEAM UK NC 2018 / v6, LEED v4 / v4.1).
  2. 2Identify which credits the aluminium spec is contributing to (Mat 01, Mat 03, LEED MR).
  3. 3Request the A&L Systems EPD and carbon data sheet for the profiles specified.
  4. 4Log recycled-content percentage and manufacturing location in the sustainability tracker.
  5. 5Ensure the NBS clause names the recycled-billet route explicitly to prevent substitution.
  6. 6Retain purchase records at handover for as-built credit evidence.

Request the full A&L Systems carbon data

For BREEAM, LEED or net-zero reporting we can provide the full carbon data behind the SEAM and REVEAL ranges — by profile type, size and manufacturing route.
