Pre-Coordination: What It Actually Means and Why It Saves the Programme

"Pre-coordinated" is one of those specification words that sounds good and explains nothing. This guide is an attempt to fix that — to set out what it actually means, what work it involves, and why it changes how a ceiling comes together on site.

The short version: coordination is the process of making sure every element in a ceiling — the channel, the ceiling itself, the lighting, the M&E services — fits together without clashing. Pre-coordination means doing that work at the drawing stage, deliberately, rather than discovering the clashes on site and solving them under pressure.

The difference between the two is where most ceiling problems live.

On a lot of projects, coordination happens by accident and by argument.

The channel is specified. The ceiling is designed. The lighting is laid out. The M&E is routed. Each of these is done well, but often separately, by different people working to different drawings at different times. Nobody's job is to make sure they all agree.

So the clashes surface where they always surface — on site, during first fix, when the sprinkler drop lands where the luminaire needs to be, or the channel line doesn't match the ceiling grid, or a junction was never detailed. At that point the fixes are expensive: an RFI goes back to the design team, work stops while it's answered, something gets modified on site, and two trades disagree about whose problem it was.

None of this is anyone being incompetent. It's a structural gap. The coordination work was real and necessary, but nobody did it early, so it got done late — which is the most expensive time to do it.

A pre-coordinated system moves that work forward, to the drawing board, before anything reaches site. In practice it means a few specific things.

The channel is designed to integrate, not just to exist

The profile geometry, the flanges, the fixing method — these are engineered so the channel sits correctly with a standard ceiling build-up, standard framing, and the trades around it. It's not a section that then has to be made to fit; it's a section designed to fit.

The junctions are resolved on paper

How the channel meets the ceiling, how it turns a corner, how it terminates — these are detailed at design stage, with drawings, rather than left for an installer to work out. A resolved junction detail is worth more on site than any amount of goodwill.

The setting-out logic is established up front

The principle that the ceiling grid is set out from the channel line, with board positions taken from the channel line, is decided before installation — so the sequence is right the first time.

The services are considered before the line is fixed

What's going in the channel — lighting, sprinklers, detection — is thought through against the channel dimensions early, so the width is right and the fittings coexist, rather than being discovered not to fit during first fix.

The common thread: decisions that would otherwise be made on site, reactively, are made at the drawing stage, deliberately. That's the whole idea.

A junction that's resolved on paper gets built the way it was drawn. A junction left to site gets built the way that's easiest that day, which is rarely the way it was drawn.

When the channel, the services and the ceiling have been coordinated in advance, first fix goes in without the stop-start of discovering conflicts, and labour stays on programme.

Fewer clashes means fewer RFIs, fewer stoppages, fewer trade-on-trade disputes, and a critical path that holds. Coordination problems on ceilings have a habit of cascading, because so much is sequenced off them — pre-coordination stops the cascade before it starts.

The pattern across all three: the work is the same work that would have happened anyway. Doing it early just makes it far cheaper, because a change on a drawing costs minutes and a change on site costs a trade, a delay and an argument.

Limits

What it doesn't mean

To keep this honest, a few things pre-coordination isn't.

It isn't a guarantee that nothing will ever need adjusting on site — buildings have tolerances and surprises. It reduces the clashes dramatically; it doesn't abolish them.

It isn't a substitute for the design team's coordination role. A pre-coordinated product makes coordination easier and gives it a head start; it doesn't do the whole job for a project that has genuinely complex, unusual geometry.

And it isn't automatic. Pre-coordination only works if the design-stage conversation actually happens — if the channel, lighting, M&E and fire inputs are brought together before the RCP is issued rather than after. The product is engineered to make that conversation productive; it still has to take place.

Being straight about the limits is the point. A claim that pre-coordination solves everything would be the kind of overclaim that makes specifiers stop trusting the rest of what you say.
